HISTORY OF AKASAKA

The area has nurtured affluence linked to the political and economic center of the city in the midst of the green and peaceful environment that has existed since the ancient Edo period.

Akasaka is located on the eastern edge of the Musashino Plateau with an undulating topography. During the Edo period, residences of feudal lords, temples and shrines were located on higher ground, and traces of the old days can be seen in the Akasaka Imperial Palace, which extends over the former residence of the Kishu Tokugawa family, and the Akasaka Hikawa Shrine, which was built by Yoshimune Tokugawa, still stands. The pond, built as part of the outer moat, was also known as a scenic spot, depicted in Utagawa Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". After the Meiji period, Akasaka remained a quiet residential area, but because of its proximity to the political and economic center of the city, a ryotei (Japanese-style restaurant) district developed around the teahouses at the edge of the pond at end of the street. At the same time, a bustling commercial district was formed, creating the prototype of a city where jobs, commerce, housing and greenery were interwoven.
