What can we do now to create a city that creates new value?
At NTT Urban Development, we are sincerely addressing this question by anticipating social changes and pioneering the future through design.
In these unpredictable times, where is the relationship between cities and their residents headed?
To find a clue, NTT Urban Development Design Management Office and the Yomiko Advertising Agency Urban Life Research Institute launched a joint research project called the "City and Resident Design Conference." Following discussions with the editors-in-chief of three magazines, the second phase of this initiative is about to begin.
The theme is "Lifestyle design that allows 'one's individuality' to coexist with 'the happiness of others and society.'" It is an attempt to consider practical possibilities while looking ahead to the future of our own consciousness.

Following on from information science researcher Dominic Chen, we had a conversation with cutting-edge hotel producer Shoko Ryuzaki. Based on the idea that "a thorough self-interest ultimately leads to altruism," we discussed everything from practical examples of hotels that have completely revamped their image to social initiatives such as postpartum care resorts. We present a digest of this revelatory conversation.
