Providing new urban apartments with 2-core single-mode optical fiber installed in every unit, ready for ubiquitous communications

NTT Urban Development Corporation
NTT ME Corporation
NTT Urban Development Corporation (Head office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kiyoshi Mita) (*1), in technical cooperation with NTT-ME Corporation (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hiroshi Ishikawa) (*2), will pioneer the ubiquitous era and provide urban apartments equipped with an environment that is ready for the era of information appliances and broadband, as a near-future information standard for apartment buildings (condominiums).
As condominium locations move closer to urban centers, the need for urban living is increasing in pursuit of the convenience of urban life, and a wide variety of customer needs are becoming apparent, including diversifying customer needs and changing societal needs. NTT Urban Development is sensitive to these changes and fluctuations, and will provide services that truly satisfy our customers, such as by taking a broad perspective and creating businesses that generate high added value.
1. Supports ultra-broadband and information appliances in the ubiquitous era
As the first step, two-core single-mode (*4) optical fiber will be laid to each unit in the "Wellith Livio Shin-Okachimachi" (51 units, Taito Ward, Tokyo (*3)), which is scheduled to begin sales in December 2003. This is extremely rare for a newly built condominium in Japan.
This effectively eliminates the equipment-based upper limit on communication speeds, and with the advent of the e-Japan initiative and the ubiquitous age, it will be possible in the future to send and receive gigabit or terabit ultra-large capacity content without making new capital investments, and it is also possible to use it like a dedicated line using optical fiber.
2. Fiber optic installation within apartment complex provides 100Mbps broadband environment
-Internet usage fee: 24 hours a day, unlimited use, 2,480 yen per month-
The broadband Internet environment (*) will be created through the introduction of NTT-ME's total solution service for condominiums, "WAKWAK Pial" (*5), which will lay optical fiber to every apartment in the condominium, providing a 100Mbps broadband Internet environment. NTT-ME will provide stable optical fiber broadband Internet connection for 24 hours a day, unlimited use, at the lowest price in Japan, just 2,480 yen per month. This will allow residents to enjoy a constant, stable 100Mbps broadband environment for a price similar to that of ADSL. Furthermore, an "all-optical" broadband Internet environment will be realized by using optical fiber wiring and optical-compatible PC modules within the occupied apartments.
This allows us to meet the needs of a diverse range of residents, including those for business use such as SOHO.
3. Meeting the diverse needs of urban apartments
As two-core single-mode optical fiber has been installed in all apartments, it will be possible for residents to use the shared broadband internet connection, and by using the remaining core individually, it will be possible to use it for B-FLET'S compatible IP phone services or future digital broadcasting, making it possible to meet a wide variety of customer needs.
4. Aiming to maximize customer satisfaction, we create better services and businesses.
By providing broadband connectivity to condominiums, NTT Urban Development will be considering providing notifications and announcements to residents via the Internet, as well as a portal site for condominium-specific local information that is closely related to daily life, such as information on eating, playing, fashion, medical care, learning, and living in the surrounding area.
By providing a comprehensive broadband environment, we believe we can promote communication throughout the apartment complex and provide high-value-added services that will satisfy our customers in this ubiquitous age.
5. Model room opening
We will provide one room in "Wellith Livio Shin-Okachimachi" as a model room. In the model room, you will be able to experience the basic layout and interior, each room such as the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and also the broadband internet environment.
6. Future Plans
With Wellith Livio Shin-Okachimachi as its first project, NTT Urban Development hopes to quickly establish itself as a broadband apartment brand in the evolving multimedia age, and contribute to the realization of a more prosperous and comfortable society.
NTT-ME will be quickly examining and developing technology and business schemes, including resolving technical issues such as securing bandwidth and software compatibility, as well as streamlining pricing, so that IP telephones can be used even in apartment-type shared internet connection users.

*4 Single mode
Fiber optic cables have a thin core through which light passes. They can input highly directional light and transmit signals with almost no dispersion within the cable, enabling ultra-high speed transmission.
*5 WAKWAK Pial
NTT-ME provides a total solution for apartment life (*1), laying single-mode optical fiber to each apartment. This cutting-edge, scalable in-building FTtd system can accommodate not only shared but also dedicated lines.
The backbone will be WAKWAK (*2), and for IP addresses, we are considering using global IP addresses (*3) so that various services via Internet connection can be received, such as control of information appliances, which are expected to become available in the future.
- *1: Total solutions for apartment life
The internet apartment service provided by NTT-ME to the Urban Infrastructure Corporation has been selected as a model by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's "Committee for the Development of Information Technology for Apartment Buildings." - *2: WAKWAK (exciting)
This is an Internet connection service provided by NTT-ME. The menu for individual users allows email, web surfing, and home page creation (50MB), and also delivers high-quality video content. The backbone uses NTT-ME's next-generation IP network "XePhion," ensuring high-quality service. - *3: Global IP address
This is an officially assigned IP address used on the Internet. By assigning a fixed IP address to your computer, you can access it from anywhere in the world.
