Tenants announced for Shin Puh Kan complex opening in spring 2020

NTT Urban Development CorporationNovember 13, 2019

NTT Urban Development Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Nakagawa Yutaka) is currently developing the "Shin Puh Kan Redevelopment Plan" on the site of the former Kyoto Central Telephone Exchange (586-2, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Karasuma-dori Anenokoji Shimobaruban-cho) with a target opening in spring 2020. The company is pleased to announce that it has decided to name the facility "Shin Puh Kan" and has finalized the facility's tenant lineup, including the retail tenants. The reborn facility will retain the name and the exterior of the historic building, the former Kyoto Central Telephone Exchange, but will continue the existing concept of "combining tradition and innovation," and development is proceeding while incorporating new added value throughout. Comprising a commercial zone with 20 stores, including the mini-theater "Uplink Kyoto," as well as shops and restaurants opening in the Kansai region for the first time and new types of businesses, a pop-up space, and the "Ace Hotel Kyoto," the facility will breathe fresh air into Kyoto and become a hub for interaction between tourists and local residents, bringing even more vitality to the city.

The idea behind the facility name "Shin Puh Kan"

At the former site of the Kyoto Central Telephone Office, the first cultural property designated and registered by Kyoto City, we partially preserved and renovated the building. With the desire to "breathe a breath of fresh air into Kyoto," we named the commercial facility "Shin Puh Kan" and it was patronized by local residents from 2001 to 2016.

The Shin Puh Kan Redevelopment Plan, which began construction in October 2017, not only aims to regenerate and utilize the former Kyoto Central Telephone Exchange, but also to retain the former Shin Puh Kan 's concept of "combining tradition and innovation" and the name of the commercial facility, "Shin Puh Kan." This will weave together the memories of the town and create a facility that will become a town landmark with charms unique to this location.

Uplink Kyoto: A mini-theater that delivers a new film culture through a wide variety of films

Uplink, a popular Tokyo mini-theater that fosters a community-based film culture with customers, will open its first Kansai location, Uplink Kyoto. This will be the third location after Tokyo's Shibuya and Kichijoji locations, and the company hopes to contribute to the revitalization of Kyoto's cultural scene.

Locally beloved stores, new shops and restaurants opening for the first time in Kansai or Kyoto

The area will bring together an unprecedented variety of shops and restaurants, including the Kansai debuts of "1LDK," "GLOBE SPECS KYOTO," and "BEAMS JAPAN," as well as new businesses "THISISSHIZEN" and "DIG THE LINE BOTTLE&BAR." Locally beloved restaurants such as "Gyoza Dokoro Sukemasa" will also be opening.

Pop-up space that brings excitement to the facility

The facility will operate a pop-up space that can accommodate the needs of various companies and organizations to set up stores and hold events. By considering collaboration with local residents and co-creation with local companies, the facility will aim to provide new experiential value to visitors, including travelers from around the world, while also contributing to regional revitalization and increasing the appeal of the city.

A new wind blows through Asia's first "Ace Hotel"

The American brand Ace Hotel will open its first Asian Ace Hotel Kyoto, at this facility. The hotel will coexist while respecting each other's cultures, offering an upper-class experience that will attract travelers attracted by creativity and bring a breath of fresh air to Kyoto's traditions and history.

A space design that harmonizes modern chic while retaining the essence of Kyoto

The building's exterior design was created by Kengo Kuma, and makes extensive use of louvers and timberwork, designed to harmonize with the cityscape of Kyoto. The timberwork, which carries on Kyoto's traditional Japanese style, is combined with the red bricks of the former Kyoto Central Telephone Office, designed by Tetsuro Yoshida, a master of modern Japanese architecture. The exterior, which faces Aneyakoji-dori and Higashinotoin-dori streets, where old-fashioned streetscapes remain, uses delicate louvers and mesh to echo the delicacy of these streets, and every detail and material has been carefully considered.

Overview and concept of the reborn "Shin Puh Kan" facility

The facility consists of a "preservation building" (2nd basement floor, 3rd floor above ground), which repurposes part of the former Kyoto Central Telephone Exchange facing Karasuma-dori, and a "new building" (2nd basement floor, 7th floor above ground) facing Higashinotoin-dori. The preservation building will have shops and restaurants on the 1st floor above ground and Ace Hotel Kyoto on the 2nd and 3rd floors above ground, while the new building will have "Uplink Kyoto" on the 1st basement floor, shops and restaurants on the 1st floor above ground, and Ace Hotel Kyoto on part of the 1st floor above ground and the 2nd to 7th floors above ground. The 2nd basement floor will also be directly connected to Exit 5 of Kyoto City Transportation Bureau Karasuma-Oike Station, improving convenience for those using the subway.

<About the facility concept>

The new facility will inherit the former Shin Puh Kan 's concept of "combining tradition and innovation" and will be reborn as a hotel and commercial complex, with the new concept of "a facility that will become a landmark of Kyoto, with charm unique to this location."

<About the new logo>

The new Shin Puh Kan will be born while preserving the existing building. In order to express this change in the logo, the framework of the traditional Mincho typeface is retained, while the parts and connections are modernized. The design was created by Shogo Kishino, who has worked on the guide signs for Odawara Castle and the Odakyu Line route map, and it was intended to be the face of Shin Puh Kan, a building that will continue to carry on its history while retaining its newness.
