NTT Urban Development Corporation

NTT Urban Development Corporation (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kou Ikeda) is pleased to announce that construction of HARAJUKU QUEST Reconstruction Project (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) has begun and will be completed on Friday, August 29, 2025, with some stores opening on Thursday, September 11. Other stores are scheduled to open sequentially from November onwards.

Since its opening in 1988, the former "HARAJUKU QUEST" has grown alongside the culture of Harajuku, adapting to the changing times and continuing to evolve alongside the town's unique character. With this latest relaunch, "HARAJUKU QUEST" aims to inherit its history and spirit while becoming a new commercial complex befitting the heart of Harajuku, bringing out the town's charm even more deeply. It will portray new charms for Harajuku as a place where people of all ages and cultures can come together and encounter unexpected stimulation and discoveries.

The history and relaunch of "HARAJUKU QUEST," which has grown alongside Harajuku culture

The planned site was formerly the official residence of the president of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation, the predecessor of the NTT Group. The former "HARAJUKU QUEST" was built on this site in 1988 under the concept of "QUEST FOR NEW STANDARD," and was a commercial complex with an attached multi-purpose hall, the first of its kind by NTT Urban Development, as a place for pursuing basic, timeless values. As a pioneering presence supporting the full-scale entry of international brands, it has continued to grow alongside the Harajuku area, flexibly changing its store configuration to suit the changing times.

HARAJUKU QUEST will now be relaunching as a new commercial complex pursuing the unique global Harajuku culture, while retaining its name and the history and spirit it has cultivated up to now, under the new concept of "Re: HARAJUKU CULTURE," in the midst of major changes in the urban structure and flow of people in today's Harajuku.

Logo design and visual identity

The new logo inherits and evolves the old "HARAJUKU QUEST" logo, and is designed to evoke the modern lifestyle of freely moving between the digital and physical worlds. The diagonally tilted square that makes up the "Q" represents the individuality of the architecture and a window to the world. The logo was designed by graphic artist/art director YOSHIROTTEN. The original font and geometric composition express a unique worldview where the city and nature, the digital and the physical intersect.

Architectural Design

The facility was designed by OMA's Shohei Shigematsu, and was planned with the architectural concept of "duality" as a space that connects the different character of the towns that coexist in Harajuku and Omotesando. Comprised of a high-rise building with six above-ground floors and two below-ground floors and a low-rise building with one above-ground floor, the facility has a passageway (a walkway within the site) between the two buildings that increases the walkability of the town, bringing depth and a new rhythm to the city.

The Omotesando side features an iconic exterior that emphasizes verticality and transparency, and the street trees are reflected on the glass surface, making the building's distinctive personality visible on the street. The facade harmonizes with the bustle of the city, creating a sense of continuity with it. Meanwhile, beyond the passage leading from Omotesando are small shops, plazas, and artscapes, and by adopting a human-scale facade that takes the residential area into consideration, the building creates a soft impression that blends naturally into the streetscape.

Additionally, along the passageway and in the basement, rammed earth walls are installed to resemble geological strata, creating a contrasting impression with the transparent glass surfaces. The walls are made of materials that reflect the geological strata and vegetation of Meiji Jingu, creating a lush green space that harmonizes with the local natural environment.

Expanding the appeal of the Harajuku area together with the existing facility "With Harajuku"

With Harajuku, which opened in front of JR Harajuku Station in 2020, has created a flow of people connecting the station to Takeshita Street, and has functioned as a base to enhance the mobility and appeal of the Harajuku area. By gently connecting the glamorous main street with an area dotted with unique street shops, it has become an opportunity to rediscover the diversity of Harajuku.

The newly reborn HARAJUKU QUEST will collaborate with With Harajuku to bring unexpected discoveries and pleasant stimulation to people walking around the city, thereby contributing to improving the value of the entire area.

An exciting place where cultures intersect

The facility will bring together a variety of stores that pursue the unique global Harajuku culture, and will be relaunched as a place where visitors can encounter things, experiences, and people that can only be found here.We aim to create an exciting commercial facility where visitors can come into contact with a variety of creative ideas.

During the construction period, photographer Wataru Tsuchiya recorded the process of HARAJUKU QUEST taking shape as a documentary. The photographs capture the connection between society, the city, and the building, and reflect the movement and sense of anticipation that existed as the project approached completion.

Going forward, we plan to undertake a variety of initiatives together with the next generation of artists who embody the unique culture and lifestyle of Harajuku.
