What can be seen from the relationship between the body and the city?
Shigematsu
In the case of the High Line, in addition to funding from NPOs, the city has been good at creating incentives, such as relaxing the floor space restrictions on surrounding buildings and raising funds from developers.Similar attempts to have the private sector take charge of public spaces are also progressing in Europe, and we are seeing results such as improved design and more creative ways of operating them.
I chose these items for today from a perspective based on the relationship between the body and the city, which I've been focusing on recently in both my life and work. OMA is often seen as an architectural firm that makes rational proposals, such as by utilizing diagrams and programming. Reflecting on this perception, I chose these items to help me think about architecture in a more physical way.
First, this laser distance meter. Whenever I visit a place and it strikes me as pleasant, I try to measure the dimensions of the space, such as the height of the ceiling or the distance to the walls.
These are binoculars. I use them to view the skyline of New York's buildings and to zoom in on details that interest me. When I look through them, I see a different view than when I look at the city with my naked eyes, and it makes me feel as if my body and five senses have been expanded, as if I were an insect flying around or looking up at the buildings.
And finally, there are the BOSE headphones. With smartphone-compatible calling and noise-canceling features, they act as a switch that lets you change your interaction with the city. Connect with the city and its people by listening to voices and sounds, or block out noise and immerse yourself in your own world.
As with AI (artificial intelligence), I feel that with technology advancing to this extent, there is almost no time left for humans to think carefully about things as humans. So I am trying to use these tools once again to walk around the city, being conscious of the relationship between my body and the city.
