NTT Urban Development Corporation (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kou Ikeda; hereinafter referred to as "the Company") is pleased to announce the completion of the "Former Shinmichi School Site Utilization Project" (hereinafter referred to as "this project"), which it had been developing in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City.

This project involved constructing "Capella Kyoto," Japan's first luxury hotel (scheduled to open in spring 2026), on the site of the former Shinmichi Elementary School, which opened in 1869 as "Banbu Elementary School" and has been loved by the local community. In addition, the "Miyagawacho Kaburenjo," which has long been a place for the preservation of geisha district culture and has been close to the local community, was rebuilt, and new community facilities were also constructed.

Through this project, our company collaborated with Kyoto City, Shinmichi Neighborhood Association, and the Miyagawa-cho Teahouse Association to aim for "further revitalization of the region and creation of an attractive town through the development of geisha district culture and the creation of new vibrancy." Even after the completion of this project, we will continue to be involved in Shinmichi area to pass on the memory of this historic town to future generations, as well as to create new vibrancy and revitalize the community.

In addition, the opening performances are scheduled to take place at Miyagawacho Kaburenjo from Saturday, November 1st to Sunday, November 9th.

"Inheriting the city's memories" and "creating new value through coexistence"

In this project, in order to harmonize the charming streets of Miyagawacho with the beautiful scenery of Higashiyama, the design utilized the characteristics of the existing building and reused parts.In addition, the "Kaburi-renjo large roof", a symbol of Miyagawacho, was reconstructed, and the building is designed to inherit the memories of the town in many places.

The entire site will feature three facilities—a hotel, a kabuki theater, and community facilities—along Shinmichi-dori Street. By newly positioning two buildings along the north-south streets of Yamato-oji-dori, Shinmichi dori, and Miyagawa-cho-dori, new pedestrian flows will be created from east to west, enhancing the walkability of the area.

We hope that the coexistence of three facilities - Capella Kyoto, a hotel where you can enjoy world-class hospitality, Kaburenjo, where geisha and maiko train in traditional performing arts, and a local facility that will serve as a place for local community activities - will create new value.
